West Texas A&M University, also known as WTAMU or simply WT, is a public university located in Canyon, which is a city in Randall County, in the US state of Texas, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 13 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Canyon is the county seat of Randall County and it is part of the Amarillo, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area, its residents being known as Canyonites.
WTAMU was established in 1910 and was originally called West Texas State Normal College, starting out as one of the seven state-funded teacher colleges. It currently offers its students, who number approximately 7000, 60 undergraduate-degree programs, 40 graduate-degree programs, and one doctoral program.
WT's sports teams are known as the Buffaloes and they compete in NCAA Division II, in Lone Star Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, equestrian, baseball, cross country and football. Their distinctive colors are maroon and white.
